Game, Set & Match

The main cast in the TV adaptation is a cross section of some of the finest actors in the UK and some top-notch international actors too in the late 'eighties. With an £8m budget - significant in 1987 - the two producers were in a position to be picky about who they cast for the different roles. They got it right. Almost. The casting of Ian Holm proved problematic.

Len Deighton was not satisfied that the cast chosen reflected the characters as he'd imagined them, and as a result chose not to permit further broadcasts or DVD releases.

Did you know?

Michael Culver, who plays Bernard Samson's aparently clueless - but actually pretty astute - boss Dicky Cruyer, played Captain Needa in Star Wars. Look out for him next time you watch it!
