Before becoming a writer Len Deighton earned his living as an illustrator and graphic artist, frequently doing commissions for advertising and PR companies as well as a stready stream of book cover commissions and some work with newspaper, including his famous cookstrips. Deighton worked for a time as an art director for a New York advertising agency, and these examples stem from that time.

The gallery below contains examples of Deighton's design and illustration style, each of which demonstrate the thick black outlining redolent of most of Deighton's published illustration work.
